Chain Martingale Option

Why choose this option?

Our chain martingale option is great for more difficult to handle dogs, those who pull heavily on lead or those who have a tendency to slip out of regular collars.  They’re especially helpful for dogs whose heads are smaller than their necks such as English Bull Terriers and Greyhounds, and they work well for most other breeds as well.

Which collars can be converted?

We can convert any of our 1″, 1.25″ and 1.5″ collars to a chain martingale design.  This option is not available for collars narrower than 1″ at this time.

How do I order this option?

To convert your collar to a chain martingale, fill out the below menu and add this option to your cart along with the collar you’d like converted.

Will my collar look different as a martingale?

Unless otherwise requested, all martingales will be made without the extra D-ring that comes on most of our deluxe collars.  Instead, your chosen stud pattern will extend all the way around the collar.  You would attach any ID tags to one of the O-rings on the chain portion of the collar.

Anything else I should know?

Brass martingale chains can cause discoloration to the coats of lightly colored dogs.  This is caused by the friction of the chain rubbing against the O-rings that are attached to the collar.  Unfortunately, there’s not much that can be done to discourage this so we’d recommend choosing the Stainless Steel option if staining is a concern.

Our Stainless Steel chains are custom made for us out of solid polished stainless steel – they are not chrome or nickel plated.    Stainless steel is a much harder metal than brass and generally won’t cause coat staining due to friction.

This collar is not adjustable and is sized to just slip over your dog’s head (for dogs whose heads are larger than their necks) or to just fit the center of your dog’s neck (for dogs whose necks are larger than their heads).  When your dog pulls against the collar, it will close down an additional 3″.

How do I measure my dog?

Measure your dog with a cloth measuring tape.  When measuring your dog, be sure to pull the tape snugly to your dog’s head/neck leaving no slack.  Remember that the object here is to measure your dog’s exact head/neck size.

DOG’S EXACT NECK SIZE:  You’ll wrap the measuring tape around the center of your dog’s neck (at the green line).
DOG’S HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE:  You’ll wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of your dog’s skull, usually just in front of the ears (at the pink line).
